In the 21st century, a family of vampires settled down on the grounds of Japan and lived a modest life whilst sucking on the blood of humans discreetly. However, the eldest daughter of the family, Karin Maaka, has an embarassing secret which cannot be revealed to anyone. Even though she is a vampire, she does not lack blood like her family members. Instead, she overproduces blood to the extent that she transfuses the excess into her victims, hence increasing their blood levels. Despite her troubling body characteristic, she attends school like any other high school student, that is until a new transfer student, Kenta Usui, enters her life.

"Yotsuya Ghost Story" is a retelling of the classic Japanese ghost story, written by the 18th century kabuki playwright Tsuruya Nanboku.
In the anime, Nanboku himself becomes the narrator. Tamiya Iemon is a ronin samurai who marries a beautiful woman named Oiwa. Oiwa is happy with her married life and the birth of their child, but Iemon feels the burden of their poverty.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島, Rokkenjima?).[6] The head of a wealthy family named Kinzo Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo's servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered.

In the near future, Yuji Kaido is an average guy diagnosed with a serious disease (the "B-cells") and is put into cryogenic stasis until a cure is found. He is woken up in the midst of a raging battle between armored soldiers and insectoid beings called the "Blue" which have overrun the Earth. The group of soldiers are from an orbiting space colony called Second Earth and were ordered to recover "sleepers" around the Earth. Among them, the soldier Marlene Angel develops a strong bond with Yuji while they try to get to Second Earth. On the journey Yuji meets many of the humans that were left behind during the evacuation due to limited resources. Standing orders for Marlene and the other troops are to consider any human survivors on the surface to be already dead, which greatly troubles Yuji.

Guts was born from a corpse hanging from a tree. He was saved from starvation by Shizu, a female who accompanied a mercenary leader named Gambino. When Guts was age 3, Shizu died from the plague, leaving Gambino to care for Guts. As Guts aged, Gambino taught Guts swordplay. He began to earn his keep by fighting alongside Gambino, although Gambino kept most of Guts' pay. Gambino allowed another mercenary to rape Guts for money. Guts later killed that mercenary during a skirmish, but he forgave Gambino for his part in what had happened. When Gambino was crippled during a skirmish, Guts became the family's sole provider. However, one night when Gambino was drunk, he attacked Guts due to his belief that Guts should have died instead of Shizu. Guts was able to fend Gambino off, and he accidentally killed Gambino by slashing him across the throat. Other mercenaries overheard them and not understanding what happened, they chased Guts from the camp. Guts was shot by an arrow and fell down a ravine, and the others gave him up for dead. When Guts awoke, he was attacked by wolves, but he was able to defend himself with his sword.

The Diclonius are a species of evolved humans with two cat-ear like horns and vectors, transparent telekinetically controlled arms that have the power to manipulate and cut objects within their reach. Diclonius are being held in a facility off the coast of Kamakura in Kanagawa, south of the city of Yokohama, by the scientist Kurama. The first of the Diclonius race, a teenage girl named by the staff as "Lucy," escapes, using her vectors to deflect gunfire and effortlessly kill security guards. As she makes her way out of the facility, a sniper shoots her, breaking her metal helmet and causing her to fall into the sea. The next morning, Kohta is moving to Kamakura to study in a university where he is reunited with his cousin Yuka. He encounters Lucy on a beach in the area, naked with her head bleeding from the bullet wound and only capable of saying the word "Nyu." Kohta and Yuka decide to take her with them, naming her "Nyu" as a result.
